Grinding vs Acid Etching Before a Garage Floor Coating

Updated October 2026 · Clean Floor Coatings, Little River, SC

Quick answer

Diamond grinding is the right way to prep concrete for a garage floor coating. It removes the smooth top layer, old sealers and stains and leaves an open, even surface the base coat can soak into. Acid etching with muriatic acid only roughens the surface a little, does not remove sealers or curing compounds, and can leave residue behind, which is why acid and primer jobs are the ones most likely to peel. Clean Floor Coatings grinds every slab.

The acid and primer shortcut

Around the Grand Strand, some installers skip the grinder entirely. They wash the floor with muriatic acid, roll on a primer and start coating. It is fast, but the coating ends up bonded to a thin, weak surface instead of to the concrete itself.

On a coastal slab with moisture coming up from below, that is the floor most likely to blister and lift, often within the first few years. Clean Floor Coatings actually started with a diamond grinder: Phil bought one, and coating floors grew from there. A proper grinder runs on every job.

What grinding also tells you

Grinding exposes the real condition of the slab: hidden cracks, soft spots and old patches show up once the top layer is off. Those get repaired before the coating goes down, instead of showing through the finish later. The concrete is also tested so the base coat is matched to how much moisture the slab is pushing.

New slabs need it too

A brand new builder slab looks clean, but it is smooth and often carries a curing compound. Acid does not remove that film, and a grinder does. See new build garage floor coating.

Frequently asked questions

Is acid etching ever enough?

Not for a professional coating system. Coating manufacturers specify mechanical prep for a reason. Acid etching is mostly found in DIY kits.

Does grinding make a lot of dust?

Grinding does make dust, which is one more reason everything comes out of the garage first. Ask Phil how the crew handles dust at the estimate.

How do I know if a company grinds?

Ask them directly what equipment they use to prep the slab. If the answer is cleaning and etching, or a primer, they are not grinding.
