Hot tire pickup
What Is Hot Tire Pickup, and Will It Happen to My Garage Floor?
Updated October 2026 · Clean Floor Coatings, Little River, SC
Quick answer
Hot tire pickup is when a garage floor coating lifts off the concrete under your tires, usually in patches the shape of the tread. Summer driving heats the tires, the heat softens a thin or poorly bonded coating, and as the tire cools it grips the coating and pulls it up when you drive away. It is a sign of thin material or weak prep, and a diamond ground slab with a moisture vapor barrier epoxy base and a hard polyaspartic top coat is built to stand up to it.

What it looks like
- Peeled patches in the tire paths, usually right where you park every day.
- The tread pattern pressed into the coating, or stuck to the tire.
- Bare, smooth concrete showing where the coating came up.
- It often shows up in the first hot summer after the floor goes down.
Why it happens
Tires heat up on the road, and on a South Carolina summer afternoon the pavement itself is hot enough to burn bare feet. Park that tire on a soft coating, like garage floor paint or a thin one part kit, and the heat softens it. As the tire cools it contracts and grips the surface. When you back out, it takes the coating with it.
Whether the coating tears or lets go depends on the bond underneath. On concrete that was only acid etched, the coating was never locked into the slab, so it releases cleanly. Moisture coming up through the slab weakens the bond even more. That is why hot tire pickup and coastal peeling so often show up on the same floor. See why coatings peel near the coast.
Hot tire pickup vs tire marks
They are different problems. Hot tire pickup is the coating physically lifting. Tire marks are brown or black shadows where chemicals in the rubber stain the surface, with the coating still in place. Marks show most on light, solid colors.
A hard, chemical resistant top coat resists staining better than paint or a soft coating, and a flake blend hides what does show. Most marks clean up with a degreaser and a stiff brush.
What helps prevent it
- 1Diamond grind the slab so the base coat bonds into the concrete instead of sitting on top. See grinding vs acid etching.
- 2Lay down a moisture vapor barrier epoxy base so moisture from below does not weaken that bond.
- 3Broadcast flake across the whole floor, which builds body into the system.
- 4Seal it with a hard polyaspartic top coat that stands up to heat.
- 5Wait the full time Phil gives you before you park on it. A coating that has not cured is soft.
Already have it?
Patching a floor with hot tire pickup rarely lasts, because the rest of the floor has the same weak bond. The fix is to grind the old coating off and start again on bare concrete. Phil looks at failed floors at the estimate so removal is part of the price. See the cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does hot tire pickup happen with professional coatings?
It can, if the slab was not ground or the coating was too thin. The prep and the system matter more than the name on the bucket.
Is garage floor epoxy paint the same as an epoxy coating?
No. Epoxy paint kits are thin, often water based products rolled over etched concrete. They are the floors most likely to lift under hot tires.
How do I clean tire marks off a coated floor?
Use a degreaser and a stiff brush, then rinse. Do it sooner rather than later, since marks are easier to lift when they are fresh.
How soon can I park on a new floor?
Phil gives you the time at the estimate. It depends on temperature and humidity on install day. Parking early is one way to cause marks on a new floor.
