How Long Does a Garage Floor Coating Take?

What happens over the two days

1. 1The crew sets up branded 10x10 tents in the driveway and moves everything out of the garage into them.
2. 2The whole slab is diamond ground.
3. 3Cracks, chips and holes are filled and leveled.
4. 4The moisture vapor barrier epoxy base coat is rolled out over the clean, ground concrete.
5. 5Color flake is broadcast into the wet base coat across the whole floor.
6. 6Once the base has set, loose flake is scraped and vacuumed so the surface is smooth and even.
7. 7The clear polyaspartic top coat goes on, with Shark Bite non skid mixed in if you asked for it.
8. 8Once the floor is ready for it, the crew moves your things back where they were.

When can I walk on it, and when can I park?

Foot traffic comes first and cars come last. How long each takes depends on the temperature and humidity on install day, so Phil gives you the times for your floor rather than a number from a chart. Parking early is one of the ways a brand new floor gets marked. See hot tire pickup.

What can make it take longer

• More than one area, like a garage plus a patio or a golf cart bay.
• An old coating, paint or sealer that has to be ground off first.
• Heavy crack or spall repair.
• Weather, for patios, pool decks and driveways that are open to rain.

What you need to do

• Plan where the cars, the golf cart and the boat will sit for the two days, since the tents take the driveway.
• Keep kids and pets off the floor until Phil says it is ready.
